There are four main Facebook privacy settings in use on the Web:
Sharing: When an individual is using Personal settings, they can make information on their Facebook profile available only to their friends. For example, they can list their hometown, their current city, or make their relationship status known.
Everyone: When an individual is using Everyone settings, their information is available to all of their friends, and is shared on each of their individual friends’ walls.
Friends of Friends: When an individual is using Friends of Friends settings, their information is available to friends of their friends, as well as to their own friends.
Friends Only: When an individual is using Friends Only settings, their information is available only to their friends, and not to anyone else.
The status information people choose to share on Facebook, as well as the degree of privacy people choose to maintain, can make a big difference in how likely people are to share information with and connect with one another. For example, private status information will be perceived to be less public than information made available to the Everyone setting. In addition, people may be even more likely to share their status information when it is public than when it is private, because their friends may have access to more information about them, such as their location. However, sharing status information may damage a person’s privacy and may cause undesired emotions, though people can protect themselves from this by choosing settings that give them more control of their information and the information they share.
The graph on the left above illustrates how you can choose between different levels of access and privacy with regards to who can see your various information about yourself, on your profile.
New profile permissions
In 2011, Facebook started to allow users to control which of their personal information is visible to other people. With the release of the new “Lists”, “Photo Albums”, “Links”, “Video”, “City” and “Collections” permissions, certain personal information was made available only to certain groups of people. All of these permissions are labeled on the graph in the top-right corner of the profile page.
These permissions were combined into the new General settings when the release of the new Facebook Graph API v2.0 in April 2012.
In 2012, Facebook announced its intent to share more information with other external services, such as
