The application was written in the programming language C, and has many built-in commands to do most common tasks such as drawing, measuring, and changing the size and font of text. It can use other Autodesk and third-party products such as AutoCAD Serial Key LT, AutoCAD Architecture, and CAGED.
Autodesk’s AutoCAD has been highly influential in the field of digital graphics and is regarded as the standard by which CAD products are compared. It is by far the most popular commercial 2D-based CAD program.
The AutoCAD user interface consists of a main window. Objects (e.g. rectangles, circles, lines, arcs, splines, text, and solids) and other viewports (i.e. tools such as the drawing grid, drawing controls, feature settings, properties, and windows) are typically organized in a viewport hierarchy on the left-hand side of the main window. Users often perform multiple tasks at the same time, which requires a variety of tools.
AutoCAD was initially designed to run on a desktop computer with an internal graphics controller and a line printer. When it was first released, it consisted of two windowing systems: the highly proprietary ViewPoint (later renamed to Windows) and a very simple non-graphical command-line window.
In 1990, AutoCAD became the first CAD program to be programmed in the C language. Since then, it has continued to evolve into a modern and versatile CAD application.
The earliest version of AutoCAD was based on the ViewPoint graphics library. ViewPoint was released with a number of features that later became the foundation of AutoCAD. In particular, ViewPoint’s history with AutoLISP is notable, as it was one of the first desktop CAD applications to implement object-oriented programming. AutoCAD became one of the first CAD applications to use the OpenLook windowing system.
The software supports various 2D and 3D CAD components and tools, including:
Drafting: Lines, arcs, rectangles, squares, 3D solids, shapes, and text
Dimensions: Length, width, and area
Paper: Drafting space for plotting, copying, viewing, or printing objects
Plotting: Overlay of vector and raster drawings
Rasterization: Plotting vector drawings on raster graphics
ObjectARX is the basis of:
3D functionality, such as support for the 3D modeler, dynamic symbol creation
2D drawing and feature-based AutoLISP
new command commands
AutoLISP command for automating drawing creation and editing
Automation of drawing tables and grids, as well as placing and clipping
Analysis and rendering of objects and features
Traditionally, C++ code is compiled into native C and C++ objects, while Visual Basic and AutoLISP run inside a virtual machine, also known as an interpreter. Nowadays, the third option is used by the.NET framework, where the source code is compiled into.NET assemblies that can be run in an isolated process.
The development tools are the same in every case. There are Windows native tools (Visual Studio, Expression Web), macOS native tools (Xcode) and, currently, Linux native tools (KDevelop). The first two are similar, the last is intended for the Linux platform.
The development environment can be cross-platform, but there are some limitations. The compilers are different for Linux and Windows, so the source code must be compiled on the target platform (Linux native tools). On the other hand, Mac OS X is designed to run on Intel-based Macs only. The source code is built on the developer’s Mac, but a cross-platform.NET application must be built on a PC or Linux.
